A minor dent to the side of the can will not affect the safety of the product. Do not purchase cans that have a major dent that distorts the can body, or the can end, or the can seam, or are otherwise damaged or bulging. This could mean the contents are contaminated and may not be safe to eat.

The coding on the can end is the production lot code, which allows for traceability back to the raw materials and processing information.
